Cuando la armada brit\u00e1nica al mando del almirante <strong>Horacio Nelson<\/strong> intent\u00f3 conquistar Tenerife en 1797, el general <strong>Antonio Guti\u00e9rrez de Otero<\/strong> y el pueblo tinerfe\u00f1o (con las milicias chicharreras y las de Garachico) repelieron el ataque que, seg\u00fan la leyenda y con el concurso del ca\u00f1\u00f3n Tigre, dej\u00f3 sin el brazo derecho a <strong>Nelson<\/strong>. La hidalgu\u00eda y caballerosidad de los tinerfe\u00f1os hizo que se curara a los heridos del bando perdedor, incluido al propio <strong>Nelson<\/strong> a quien, seg\u00fan se cuenta, se le ense\u00f1\u00f3 a escribir con la otra mano. Los brit\u00e1nicos tienen al almirante <strong>Nelson<\/strong> como un h\u00e9roe nacional pero nuestro general <strong>Antonio<\/strong> <strong>Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong> sigue sin recibir el reconocimiento que (entiendo) se merece.
